2019 Darow Series Tempranillo
Each vintage brings with it differences in fruit composition that result in different wines. In 2019 we experienced one of the coolest ripening periods in history that allowed us to craft this Tempranillo that speaks of elegance and refinement versus the variety’s more common raw structured power. The trademark blue and black fruits our estate’s Darow Series soil imbue are ever-present and buttressed by fresh leather, olive, cherry cola, tobacco, and dried herb notes. While more elegant and refined than many of our prior vintages this wine is still quite massive on the palate and will reward cellaring. We advise enjoyment from 2022-2035 and think of roasted pork shoulder basted with rosemary-paprika butter and grilled Riojano peppers.

BevX.com: 94 points; “Brilliant, deep ruby color. The aromatics are intense, offering scents of black currant, leather, and black tea with supporting notes of cocoa, dried herbs, tapenade, and cigar box. The palate confirms the nose delivering a black fruit-driven core with flavors of black cherry, fig, cola nut, and rosemary. The finish is long and lingering with chewy tannins. Full-bodied and perfectly balanced with a meaty texture.” – BevX.com Sean Ludford
Although part of the Rogue Valley AVA, the 2Hawk Estate Vineyard lies in an area known locally as the Bear Creek sub-basin. The two-layered bedrock beneath our soils consists of a shallow volcanic layer, the Roxy Formation, and a deeper, softer layer of alluvial sandstone, The Payne Cliffs Formation. The Klamath Mountains uplifting event, roughly 20 million years ago, began a long erosion process that resulted in our predominately volcanic soils, which are unique to the Rogue Valley AVA. An area of cobbled river rocks in our eastern section and a sandy streak of considerably younger colluvial deposit running through the center of our vineyard site distinguish 2Hawk from neighboring vineyards. Overall, we have some of the oldest soils in the valley and they are characterized as shallow silty- to clayey-loams that are moderately well drained with moderate to rapid runoff.
