Tasting notes

We designate estate-grown wines of special distinction as “Darow Series” after our vineyard’s most prevalent soil type. The 2016 Darow Series Tempranillo, sourced from our estate’s oldest vineyard block, is nothing short of a knockout. The blockbuster nose exudes crushed blackberry, dried plum, fig jam, tobacco leaf, and graphite aromas. The palate is tightly wound and packed with chewy ripe black cherry and dark berry flavors along with hints of cocoa, coffee, and baking spices. This wine has the textural purity for enjoyment now after several hours of aeration, but what it really wants is at least four to five years in a cool cellar to let the mouth-filling tannins resolve into an effortless finish. Once mature, it should provide another five to eight years of enjoyment. We love a classic pairing with this wine, so consider spicy pork empanadas with romesco dipping sauce.

Other notes

The 2016 vintage was notable for 2Hawk as our first harvest from our major vineyard expansion project in 2014. Like in 2015, spring arrived early, but it was cool and dry. Since the weather during flowering limited the crop load naturally, very little fruit thinning was required. Summer was typically warm and absent the normal early showers, so the vineyard required extra attention to ensure we had no detrimental water stress. Fortunately, summer gave way to a beautiful and temperate early fall season for the final ripening phase. Harvest was definitely early given the age of the vineyard and amount of fruit. We finished picking our mature vines just before the October rains settled in.

International Wine Report: 94 points; "The color intensity predicts the experience to come with this "reserve" Rioja style Tempranillo. Showing complex developing aromas of the spice embedded subtle wood of an aged cigar box, anise, rich earth, and dark dried blackberry. Super bright acidity meets beautifully textured tannin and is well acquainted with plum, baking spices, black peppercorn, and dried oregano."

BevX.com: 94 points / 4.5 stars; "Brilliant, deep ruby color. The aromatics are very intense offering scents of black cherry and mineral with supporting notes of cigar box, dried herbs, and fig. The palate confirms the nose delivering a black fruit-driven core with flavors of black fruits, black tea, and baking spices. The finish is long and lingering with dry tannins. Medium to full-bodied and perfectly balanced with a meaty texture."

Wine Enthusiast: 90 points; "Though a bit riper than the previous vintage, this has a charred edge to the flavors, perhaps from the barrel regimen. The dominant fruit flavor is lightly leathery dried cherries— right up the varietal alley. There are additional highlights of chocolaty mole adding to the drinking pleasure. The winery suggests further aging for this wine, which seems like a good idea. Drink after 2022." — Paul Gregutt

Although part of the Rogue Valley AVA, the 2Hawk Estate Vineyard lies in an area known locally as the Bear Creek sub-basin. The two-layered bedrock beneath our soils consists of a shallow volcanic layer, the Roxy Formation, and a deeper, softer layer of alluvial sandstone, The Payne Cliffs Formation. The Klamath Mountains uplifting event, roughly 20 million years ago, began a long erosion process that resulted in our predominately volcanic soils, which are unique to the Rogue Valley AVA. An area of cobbled river rocks in our eastern section and a sandy streak of considerably younger colluvial deposit running through the center of our vineyard site distinguish 2Hawk from neighboring vineyards. Overall, we have some of the oldest soils in the valley and they are characterized as shallow silty- to clayey-loams that are moderately well drained with moderate to rapid runoff.
